Dear Facebook, Please Remove This Fake Fan Page!

Filed by Alpha on October 13th, 2009

I’m fighting a small hopeless battle the last 2 weeks. It’s about a fan page on Facebook that claims it represents me. It’s titled “Artwerk”, this is my nickname on Flickr.com. It seems it was created way back in August 2009 but I spotted it in the middle of September. Its part of a long and somewhat twisted story about a woman suffering from manic depression which for some reason is obsessed with my humble persona. It contains some ridiculous messages like “Artwerk is about to nail down a new girl…” and it has links to 3 of my photo sets on Flickr. To date, it also has 8 fans.

I filed a report to Facebook staff almost two weeks ago, explaining why the page is fake and that the Artwerk persona it claims to represent is no one bu me. I also provided the necessary links to my website and to my Flickr profile. Any person who reviews content wouldn’t have much difficulties finding the truth just looking at the content and the provided details in the “Info” tab:

Basic Info
Affiliation: ARTWERK
Location: Designer Town; Tzarevo, Bulgaria

Detailed Info
Website: http://Artwerk; http://on; http://Flickr
Personal Information: AlphaDesigner
Personal Interests: Prince & Madonna

Contact Info
Email: rodaragtime at yahoo

According to Facebook’s policies, which are displayed on the page that enables creation of fan and business pages:

Fake Pages and unofficial “fan pages” are a violation of our Pages Guidelines. If you create an unauthorized Page or violate our Pages Guidelines in any way, your Facebook account may be disabled.

There is a necessary requirement for a confirmation that the person who creates the page is explicitly authorized to do so. I mean you have to click on it and agree to this statement, it’s not like you are able to skip it or overlook it. The question now is how long will I have to wait before the reviewers at Facebook decide to take action. Obviously more than two weeks. So for now, I will have to accept the theory that Facebook is a place where imposters can do whatever they want and there’s nobody who really cares about genuine content.

Imposter!

Any update? Did they ever take action? Did you try following up with a DMCA takedown notice?

I have had something similar happen to me on Facebook, and was wondering where you went on Facebook to get resolution? Was there any way that you found to contact Facebook Administration directly? Any help you could supply would be wonderful. Thanks!

I’m another one wondering if you got any response. A friend of mine is having trouble with this same issue.

Hi everybody! I’m sorry I’m answering so late.

In short – no, despite my report (and reports by some of my friends) the page is still online. I have given up and I decided not to use the name “Artwerk” as my nick anymore. That was the easiest solution I could find. :(

Well, that really stinks. I’m so sorry. FB should be more responsive–with great power, comes great responsibility, and they aren’t measuring up on that count.
